Active Travel Fiasco - Cycle scheme abandoned before it’s finished

12 October 2020

Councillors April Clark and Mark Hood

The Green Party supports active travel. We want you to be able to safely walk and cycle and leave the car at home for short trips.

We are not anti-car; we are simply pro-alternative. So, we were delighted to learn that Kent had £1.6m to spend on trialling new measures.

We support 20mph limits on most Tonbridge Roads, but not arterial routes, and we want linked-up cycle schemes that  meet the needs of new cyclists who want to use their bikes, without creating travel chaos for drivers.

Our goal is to improve travel for everyone. We consulted with Tonbridge Bicycle Users Group and we shared our recommendations. We were ignored.

Local Green Councillor Mark Hood commented: “Unlike our Kent County Councillors, we live in Tonbridge and we knew that cyclists didn’t want the scheme proposed for Quarry Hill.

“It was clear that it would cause chaos. It’s been a huge waste of money and massive opportunity lost.

“The scheme was implemented without even consulting local Councillors and withdrawn before being trialled or even having been completed.”
