Kent County Council awarded £1.6 million for active travel schemes; no schemes approved for Tonbridge & Malling in first tranche

30 June 2020

The Tonbridge & Malling Green Party is disappointed that the borough has not had any of the schemes proposed accepted for the first tranche of funding allocated to Kent County Council (KCC). KCC has been awarded £1.6 million by the government for active travel schemes.

The Department for Transport cash is specifically to invest in walking and cycling initiatives across the county. We had identified several pieces of inexpensive cycling infrastructure and suggested a temporary one-way system for Tonbridge High Street to facilitate additional pop-up cycleways.

Schemes approved by the county during the first tranche include:

  • Improvements to the Crab and Winkle cycle route between Canterbury and the harbour in Whitstable
  • A light segregation of cycling routes in Tunbridge Wells
  • The trial of a town-wide 20mph zone in Faversham
  • A school street scheme at Drapers Mill School in Margate
  • A new shared cycle route in Hythe
  • Modal filters and road closures for St Dunstan’s Street in Canterbury

We remain hopeful that KCC is able access the second tranche of funding so that Tonbridge & Malling may also benefit from active travel schemes.
