The Green Party’s co-leader Jonathan Bartley has thrown his support behind boat owners who face eviction from the Barden Boatyard in Tonbridge. The boat owners are due in Hastings County Court on March 13.

Jonathan said: “I’m very concerned about the plight of boat owners at the Barden Boatyard and wish them all the best in their court case and in the efforts being made to raise funds to help pay for legal representation.

“At a time when it is increasingly difficult to find affordable housing, boat ownership is a sustainable and cost-effective option to conventional housing. The preservation of residential moorings is essential for residents to be able to have a secure future in the communities they call home. The boatyard also provides habitat to a wide range of wildlife species and is a colourful addition to the riverside.”

Local residents have rallied round and have launched a Crowdfunding campaign to pay for the boat-owners’ legal expenses as they face the owners of the boatyard in court on charges of trespass and continuing threats of eviction.
